Our Murphy Girl

January 05, 2010 | 13 comments

It is with a sad and very heavy heart that I must share this with you today.

Our Murphy girl fell last week and hurt her leg. Even though she was not bearing weight on her leg, she did not seem to be in any pain. Our vet said to keep her off the leg and see how she did.
We took her in today and the X-ray showed a fracture on the femur, just above the kneecap. This was related to a bone tumor and the cancer had probably already spread. Our choices were to amputate the leg and hope that the cancer had not spread, or to let her go.

It was a horribly hard choice to make but we chose to let her go. This tumor is something that must of been painful for her for a while and yet, we never knew. At 15ish, we thought arthritis was our only concern. Her energy and playfulness was constant and continued even when she could only get around on 3 paws. Just Saturday, only a few days after the fall, she wanted to run and play with a guest dog, which of course, we would not let her do. It would be hard to imagine her life without playing.

Murphy LIVED to play with people, toys other dogs. She was the most gentle lovable dog I have ever met and we know that she will be missed. We know that if there is a doggy heaven, she is probably wishing she could have taken her frisbee with her.

We have taken oodles of pictures and videos of our girl and each one is cuter then the next. I have tried to put together a couple collages of our baby girl but can go no further today. Check back later.

All week after her fall, we knew she needed to be near us so we made a bed for her in the office. As she felt better, she would get herself up and lay next to the door when we were out doing cabins. We got concerned that she may do more harm so we let her come with us to the cabins. Even on 3 paws, she insisted on hopping around to be by our side. This is a few of her last week with us

Dear Tami and Steve,
We just read your blog. We're so very sorry Murphy is no longer by your side, but I have a feeling she is checking up and in on you.
We've been in the place where you are, and feel the ache. Now, we remember more of the silly and sentimental things. We hope you are at that point soon.
We love you both.
Chuck and Bonnie

Thank you guys for your love and condolences. Kinda silly how the loss of a pet can cause so much sadness in me. Now that the snow is melting, I am finding more of her frisbees and balls: having a few meltdowns once in awhile. Simply miss having my joy, my buddy by my side.

We immediately tried to call but had to leave a message instead. We love the three of you so much and send the two of you the very strongest hugs!!! Can imagine her frolicking with our Annie up in doggie heaven waiting for our turn to join them.

Murphy was the best greeter anyone could ever ask for. She was perhaps the sweetest dog I have ever met. Run free Murphy.. we will see you again one day across the Rainbow Bridge... you will be missed tremendously.

I am so sorry to hear that you lost your sweetheart, Murphy. You made the right choice in letting her go. Please be assured that there is a doggie heaven for all our beloved pets. Please check this out, and put Murphy's name in. http://www.rainbowsbridge.com/Poem.htm
When I had to put down my pal this website helped a great deal. Good Luck from your neighbor in Moose River.

Thank you JB. We will check out the site.

Tami & Steve,
Linda and I are sad to hear the news about Murphy. We and other pet owners that have lost their beloved pet know exactly what you are going through right now. We lost our Kelsey back in July. She was 15 also.
The best thing right now is for the two of you talk about Murphy. Believe me... it will get better and your tears will soon be replaced by smiles as you remember her.
Take care,
Jay & Linda Goodwin

Thanks Jay....it is now 3 days later and it is already a little easier. The tears are less but I still look for toys on the floor that she left (so I do not trip) and still walk around where her bed used to be. Walking out to the cabins yesterday to prepare for guests, it was such a lonely feeling. She has been walking to and around here right next to me or Steve for 6 years and having that constant reminder is still hard.
Thank you though for your caring words.

Tami & Steve
